To draw more Indians to Spain, Spain Tourism is pushing for a direct flight between India and Spain. “We are talking to Kingfisher Airlines to start a direct service between Delhi or Mumbai and Madrid. We are very positive about the talks,” Joan Mesquida Ferrando, Deputy Minister for Tourism and Domestic Trade, Spain said. According to him, Kingfisher has to study the financial implications of the service. “If everything goes well, we are expecting to see the launch of Kingfisher’s service by end of this year,” he opined. Ferrando was recently in Mumbai and Delhi to promote Spain’s tourism in the Indian market. Arturo Ortiz, Director-India, Tourism Office of Spain, also echoed the similar view. “There is a bright possibility of direct flights between India and Spain as Kingfisher Airlines is set to join the One World Alliance next year,” Ortiz said. According to the current bilateral agreement between India and Spain, any Indian carrier can fly to Spain. Apart from direct air service, Spain is also looking at bringing Spanish investment to the Indian hospitality industry. “We met with the Indian Tourism Secretary where we discussed the possibility of Spanish investment in the Indian hotel sector,”he said.
