Odisha Tourism invites foreign film makers to Odisha

Odisha has ample provisions to encourage film makers, and necessary revision in state tourism policy could be possible in this regard, Ashok Chandra Panda, Minister for Tourism & Culture, Govt. of Odisha said on the occasion of the screening of the ‘God’s Own People’, a documentary on Nabakalebar (Devine Rebirth) of Lord Shree Jagannath at the recently concluded Cannes International Film Festival. Panda, who participated in the inaugural programme of the festival, invited the film makers to take full opportunity extended by Odisha Tourism to shoot their films here. Besides, the screening will help worldwide recognition of Shree Jagannath Cult, he hoped.

He informed that an amount of Rs 78 lakhs has been spent for production of the documentary, which was highly praised by distinguished personalities including the Governor and the Chief Minister during a special show in Bhubaneswar some days back. Among others, Indian Ambassador in France Mohan Kumar, Director, Tourism; Nitin Bhanudas Jawale, Co-Producer of the film Akshya Parija and Tourist officer Ratikant Patnaik were present.

He expressed that the screening of the documentary will garner much appreciation worldwide on Ratha Yatra and other rituals relating to Lord Jagannath among scholars, culture lovers, tourists and academicians. Besides, it will help boost Odisha’s tourism potential, especially attracting foreigners towards religious tourism in our state, he said.

Meanwhile, Odisha Government will declare its new Tourism Policy 2016 in August. This was revealed at a review meeting of the Tourist and Culture Department held under chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently. The foreign tourist inflow to Odisha declined drastically in the year 2015 compared to the previous year. While 71,426 overseas tourists visited the State in 2014, the number came down to 66,971 in the last year. However, the domestic tourist footfall increased during 2015. A total of 1, 17,87,117 tourists from different states visited Odisha against 1,07,90,622 in the previous year. The Government has targeted that 80,000 foreign and 1.35 crore domestic tourists would come during the current year.

According to Panda, the state tourism and culture department had been able to contribute a meager less than one per cent to the total foreigner inflow to the country in the past five years. Last year, only 0.83 per cent of foreigners, who visited the country, came to Odisha.

However, things are going to improve as the state tourism ministry is now planning some marketing initiatives in overseas markets. “We are trying to conduct road shows in various countries. We are also planning to tie up with the tourism departments of other countries to promote our tourist destinations at international locations,” Panda was quoted as saying.

Road shows were recently held in London and Berlin to promote tourism in Odisha, while there are plans to host similar shows in Australia and Asian countries. The department also plans to set up tourist centres in various countries and promote Odisha’s tourist destinations on social media. Most visitors to the state have so far come from the UK and the US.
