The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office announced the latest inbound consumption trends from the Japan Tourism Agency, revealing a surge in travel spending by foreign visitors.
Indian visitors to Japan are contributing significantly to Japan’s travel economy. They spent 19.2bn yen (approx. INR 10,768mn) during the April-June period of 2024, a remarkable 120.7% increase from the pre-pandemic levels in the same period of 2019, and a 63.1% rise compared to 2023.
In the April-June 2024 period, overall travel consumption reached an impressive 2,140.2bn yen (approx. INR 1.2mn crores), reflecting a 73.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 68.8% rise from the same period in 2019.
In the April-June period of 2024, Indian visitors to Japan contributed a total expenditure of 19.2bn yen, accounting for 0.9% of the total foreign visitor spend. Their spending habits showed that the largest portion of their budget went to accommodation (44.3%), followed by food and beverages (18.6%), shopping (17.5%), transportation (15.6%), and leisure (3.7%).
Notably, the average travel expenditure per Indian visitor was 266,186 yen, which is 11.3% higher than the overall average spends per foreign visitor (239,028 yen) and represents a significant 61.4% increase compared to 2019. Specifically for tourism and leisure, Indian tourists spent an average of 299,950 yen, which is 25.8% higher than the global average of 238,389 yen for the same category, marking a 68.2% rise from 2019.
A total of 71,923 Indians traveled to Japan during this period, reflecting a 36.7% growth compared to the same period in 2019 and a 48.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, May 2024 saw the highest number of Indian visitors in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024, with 29,100 Indians traveling to Japan, representing a 61.7% rise compared to May 2023.
