Growth prospects of conscious luxury travel: Challenges & opportunities

Mature travellers, those who are well-travelled and well-informed, are increasingly driving the demand for sustainable travel options. This demographic’s influence is pushing the travel industry to offer more sustainable choices, across all categories comfort to luxury, says Karl Vazifdar, Co-Founder, TealFeel in his authored column.

Human beings by our innate nature are humane. Our daily choices often reflect a deep-rooted desire to be good, do good and contribute positively to the world around us. In the area of sustainability, it’s reducing plastic use, recycling, or supporting organizations that champion human rights, animal welfare, and education. These actions not only reflect our humaneness and values but also provide a profound sense of fulfilment, knowing that we’re part of a collective movement towards positive change.

It’s this same ethos that increasingly influences how we approach travel and other aspects of life, where conscious decisions lead to more meaningful experiences and a better world for all. This consciousness extends to travel choices as well. There has been a significant increase in travellers being drawn to destinations where environmental preservation and wildlife conservation are prioritized. By visiting these places, we not only support their efforts but also gain a deeper understanding of what it means to do the “right thing.” This form of travel allows us to witness and participate in sustainable practices firsthand, reinforcing our commitment to making a positive impact on the world.

The next generation is taking the lead in ensuring the planet is preserved and protected and by being active participants in decisions made by families, the future of conscious travel is in the right hands.

There is a heightened global awareness of the environment and tourism is responsible for 11% of the world’s carbon emissions. Therefore, it’s not surprising that travellers are slowly but increasingly becoming aware of the impact of travel on the environment. Booking.com’s Sustainability Report of 2023 says that 76% of travellers want to travel more sustainably.

Mature travellers, those who are well-travelled and well-informed, are increasingly driving the demand for sustainable travel options. Their conscious approach to daily life extends to how they travel, and they seek experiences that align with their innate values. This demographic’s influence is pushing the travel industry to offer more sustainable choices, across all categories comfort to luxury. It’s a clear indication that sustainability is becoming a key consideration across all aspects of travel, reflecting the broader shift towards more responsible and ethical consumption.

It’s a positive sign that travellers are increasingly recognizing the importance of their choices and how they can contribute to a healthier planet. The hope that this deeper connection between people and the planet will lead to mutual benefits is a powerful motivator to make the right choice.
